Meryl Streep arrived a day earlier and visited the Pergamon Museum und the Theatre am Schiffbauerdamm and would have liked to have seen more from Berlin. Pierce Brosnan only paid the city a short visit, was seen out dining with his wife. Although, if rumours are to be believed, he’s looking for a place to stay in Berlin, whilst he’s filming here next Spring.

The plot of the film follows that of the musical, in that it’s not an ABBA biography, but tells, through their songs the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her mother Donna (Meryl Streep), who live on a little Greek island. Sophie plans a dream wedding with her childhood sweetheart Sky (Dominic Cooper) and would also like to have her father give her away.

The only problem being her mother has never told her who he is. Secretly she finds out from her mother’s diary, that three men (played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth und Stellan Skarsgård) come into question. So she invites all three. Of course without her mother’s knowledge and now the fun starts, Worth mentioning is also the fact that the actors sing the ABBA songs themselves, when not perfectly.

The cinema premiere and party for the evening were cancelled due to the strike threat from US actors, The distributors fearing the stars might support their less well paid colleagues and not show up,

What 30 years ago started off as a political demonstration against the violence and discrimination experienced by gays and lesbians, with a couple of floats and a small group of spectators, has turned into a massive spectacle, almost a carnival and attracts guests from all over the world. In doing so, the demonstration aspect is not forgotten, with this year’s motto „Hass du was dagegen“ (roughly translated as: Hate, do something to stop it), which seeks to draw attention to the problem of everyday violence against homosexuals and other minority groups.

On the morning before the parade, politicians along with representatives of lesbian and gay organisations took part in a commemoration service, at the new memorial to the persecution of homosexuals under the Nazis.

The name Christopher Street Day (CSD) is used in Germany and Switzerland (whereas Gay Pride or Pride are more common in the rest of the world) and celebrates the protest and uprising of homosexuals and other minorities against police assaults that took place in New York’s Christopher Street in Greenwich Village on June 27, 1969.

Included in the nearly 50 floats, which took part in the parade, were nearly all the large political parties, SPD (Social Democrats), the Greens (with Claudia Roth), CDU (conservatives), FDP (liberals) and Die Linke (Socialists), along with trade unions, state-owned companies (such as Vivantes, Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the BVG, Berlins public transport operator), also the German Band Rosenstolz (not making a personal appearance, but showing their support with their own float) and many, many more.

At around 11 am, after breakfasting, Dustin Hoffman left the hotel in trainers, summer shirt and sunglasses and went largely unnoticed by the waiting Kylie fans. After visiting the Holocaust memorial, he returned to the hotel, where he posed for fans at a window. Always one for a laugh, he disappeared only to re-emerge at the window with a camera, with which he proceeded to photograph the fans with.

Officially Kylie Minogue was to leave the hotel by way of the underground car park, but she chose to leave by the main entrance. There she posed with fans for photos and signed autographs. Then to the airport for her flight to Rotterdam, Holland for her concert in the evening.

Dustin Hoffman didn’t have so far to go, just round the corner to then cinema in Potsdamer Platz, for the premiere that evening, so he used the afternoon to go shopping with his wife and daughter in the Friedrichstrasse.

It’s a hot day in Berlin, but not as hot as Kylie, who brings the Velodrom to boiling point. Nearly 8000 fans await therein on their star, Kylie. Then at 8pm, the waiting comes to an end, as she appears on stage dressed in a lilac gown from Gautier and opens with “Speakerphone”.

The lavish stage scenes, massive lighting system, fantastic dancers, dozens of costumes, Kylie herself changes eight times during the show, appearing as a Cheerleader, a Sailor, a Geisha, a Fantasy-General emerging from a red skull, etc. She sang songs from her latest album “X” (her tenth studio album), but also hits such as „Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” or her classic from the 80’s “I Should Be So Lucky”.

A once in a lifetime show, great songs, a super atmosphere, phenomenal. The audience raised the roof and won’t let Kylie from stage. She is speechless over so much adulation and adds one encore after the other. A unique experience, just how much energy and enthusiasm are in the petit Kylie? She is visibly moved and wholeheartedly thanks her fans… saying she feels very welcome in Berlin and hopes to see all again soon…

…..that’s what we’re hoping too, Kylie…come back soon!

The fans went wild as the Hollywood beauty Charlize Theron appeared, but that was nothing, compared to the arrival of Will Smith where all bedlam to broke loose. His every movement was accompanied by a stampede of fans and a deafening chorus of “Will, Will, Will…”. If fans wished an autograph, a photo, a couple of words or just simply touch their superhero, Will Smith was more than happy to oblige.

Not only Will Smith, but also Charlize Theron enjoyed mingling with the crowd. Both were on top form, here and there a joke or a little playful acting for the fans or press. After more than an hour Will finally emerged on the CineStar, cinema balcony.

Once there, together with the presenter, Kai Pflaume he introduced himself and the others from the film. Kai had a present for him, a German replica football top with the name Hancock on the back. Of course Will had to put it on right away and after throwing a couple of autographed shirts into the crowd he disappeared into the cinema. Inside, autographed Euro 2008 footballs were a prized memento among the guests. Will Smith also wishing the German team the best of luck during the remainder of the tournament.

John Hancock (Will Smith) is not the typical superhero. He’s lazy, unfriendly and worst of all an alcohol addict, but he’s also invulnerable, has superhuman powers and can fly faster than the speed of sound. But his efforts to help others are wrought with trouble, partly caused by his unconventional methods and after several mishaps the population of Los Angeles have had enough. He is the one everybody loves to hate.

Fortunately a PR advisor, Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), whose life he’d saved, wants to help him resurrect his battered image. But as Hancock falls in love with Ray’s attractive wife Mary (Charlize Theron) the chaos is perfect - especially as it transpires they have surprisingly a lot more in common than at first sight..

As to be expected there were plenty of celebrities on show on the Red Carpet including; Oliver Bokern, Bruno Eyron, Tanya Neufeldt, Axel Schreiber, Gaby Papenburg with son Felix, Inge Posmyk, Franziska Knuppe, Annabelle Mandeng, Fredi Bobic, Cherno Jobatey, Manuel Cortez, Michael Marx, Hans-Reiner Schröder and his wife Kathrina, and Minu Barati-Fischer.

As Celine didn’t want to be apart from her family during her tour and to avoid them having to change hotels every couple of days, she decided while in Germany to stay in the hotel, The Regent, am Gendarmenmarkt. Her husband, René Angélil, their 7 year old son, René Charles, her mother Thérèze (who is 81) and one of her sisters are all present in Berlin.

In between concerts she has taken the time to show her family Berlin and whilst his parents are away to concerts René Charles practices golf with his Aunt and a bodyguard. Celine also brought her mother along to the Berlin concert.

Celine is maybe a pop diva, but doesn’t behave like one with her fans. Nearly everyday she emerges from the hotel entrance and signs autographs. Even before and after a concert, presumably exhausted, she doesn’t disappear like most of her contemporaries in the underground car park, but spends a few minutes with the fans at the main entrance.

Opening act was Vincent, the latest export from Sweden, who sang among other things his German radio hit “Miss Blue”. Then came the moment all were waiting for: Juanes stepped onto the stage and the party could begin.

The evening was hot, so was the crowd (although the men eyed the stage enviously) and Juanes was loud, charming and racy as ever. He sang songs from his new album, “La vida… es un ratico”, such as his new single “Tres”, along with older classics. His music is never boring, always changing, Pop-Rock, Reggae, Funk, along with African beats and of course there is also a lot of Columbian Folk and Latino influence and surprisingly a touch of Heavy Rock (Juanes shone with a guitar solo).

His text is always in Spanish and usually tells a sad tale, mainly from his war stricken homeland, despite (or perhaps because of) this his concerts rock and the crowd wildly join in the singing. Juanes leaves room in his music for his band, with the songs so constructed to allow them all have a chance in the limelight.

Of course no concert would be complete without his summer hit “La Camisa Negra”, which sadly was also the finale. To round up Juanes live is not to be missed.

Today Juanes met with the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and received a cheque for 200,000 Euros from the German government. Juanes will forward this to his “Mi Sangre” Foundation, which helps landmine victims, especially children.

Unnoticed by those around him, he arrived shouldering his guitar, inconspicuously dressed in jeans, dark jacket and t-shirt, with his hair hidden under a baseball cap.

With a victory sign and mobile firmly pressed to his ear, he obligingly posed for a couple of photos for us. No sign of press or fans!

The rally was moderated by the German actor Ralf Bauer, with music from the German bands “Die Prinzen”, “2raumwohnung“, “Wir sind Helden” & hip hop singer Ray Horton. The Tibetan singer, Ani Choyling sang Amazing Grace both in her mother tongue and in English, which was stirring!

As, shortly after 5pm the Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama) arrived on stage, hundreds of balloons, in the national colours of Tibet (red, yellow and blue) were released into the air.

So for the second time this week, Potsdamer Platz was filled with screaming fans. Sarah Jessica Parker was the first of the leading ladies to emerge from the white limousines, and step on to the pink carpet; Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis then followed in ten minute intervals and spent over an hour with their fans.

They then appeared on the balcony of the CineStar for a couple of words in broken German, before the premiere in the cinema, where after a short discussion they sped back to their hotel, the Adlon at the Brandeburg Gate, leaving the remaining guests to enjoy the film.

The film debut of the four friends from Manhattan takes place four years after the series finale and is about, what else, men, sex, fashion and shoes. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) und Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), now over forty, continue to cope with jobs and relationships, while trying to prove themselves in motherhood, marriage and Manhattan real estate.

Ahead of the premiere, there was some bickering as the New Yorker weren’t pleased at being by-passed for the world premiere (London) and even Berlin came before their city (the home the series). The Berlin celebrities were piqued, as they hadn’t received an invite, but as one can see from the photos they were amply represented.

A large number if celebrities weren’t for missing the chance to show themselves on the pink carpet, including Esther Seibt, Manuel Cortez, Jan Hahn with Alissa Jung, Nadine Warmuth, Jana Ina and husband Giovanni Zarrella, Irina von Bentheim (the German voice of Sarah Jessica Parker) together with Klaus-Peter Grap, Alexandra Neldel, Jochen Schropp accompanied Kerstin Linnartz, und Tanya Neufeldt, Gedeon Burkhard in female company, Sabie C, Barbara Meier und Bettina Cramer.
