Hotel Adlon Berlin

The double Oscar winning actress, Meryl Streep and former James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan visited the German capital to promote their new film, the musical Mamma Mia! (the film adaptation of the successful musical from the former ABBA members, Benny Andersson und Björn Ulvaeus). Also present were the two young stars Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, along with Christine Baranski und director Phyllida Lloyd (who also directed the original ‘Mamma Mia!’ Broadway Musical).

Meryl Streep arrived a day earlier and visited the Pergamon Museum und the Theatre am Schiffbauerdamm and would have liked to have seen more from Berlin. Pierce Brosnan only paid the city a short visit, was seen out dining with his wife. Although, if rumours are to be believed, he’s looking for a place to stay in Berlin, whilst he’s filming here next Spring.

The plot of the film follows that of the musical, in that it’s not an ABBA biography, but tells, through their songs the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her mother Donna (Meryl Streep), who live on a little Greek island. Sophie plans a dream wedding with her childhood sweetheart Sky (Dominic Cooper) and would also like to have her father give her away.

The only problem being her mother has never told her who he is. Secretly she finds out from her mother’s diary, that three men (played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth und Stellan Skarsgård) come into question. So she invites all three. Of course without her mother’s knowledge and now the fun starts, Worth mentioning is also the fact that the actors sing the ABBA songs themselves, when not perfectly.

The cinema premiere and party for the evening were cancelled due to the strike threat from US actors, The distributors fearing the stars might support their less well paid colleagues and not show up,
